Life of a Cub Fan

When I was a young lad (9 or 10), I was then as I am now, a diehard Cub fan. My mother and father passed the disease onto my brothers, and we did the same to our kids. I call it a disease because that's the only way I know how to describe being a Cub fan. I should have said an incurable disease, because once you are one, you are one for life. I don't care where you go. You can move to the north pole, and you are still a Cub fan. I have asked my parents time and time again why couldn't you have been a Yankee fan? Look what a happy life I would have had.

Anyway, when I was a youngster, I remember my father always saying "I will never see a world series as long as I live." I always thought he was exaggerating. Then he would look at me and say "it's too bad son because you will never see one either." Of course I would humor him by shaking my head in agreement but thinking deep down that the old man is nuts. I mean they have to win eventually. All teams win eventually. Well that was then, and now I see where the old man was coming from because I'm starting to think the same thing. After all my Grandfather passed away at 93 never getting to see his team win a world series, how pathetic. Now, I am starting to think that the Cubs don't want to win. Think about it...what's in it for them to win. Everyday the park is filled to capacity and they have fans all over the world. I mean think about it..... once they win, the hype is over, and they are just another team. But as it stands now, they get to be the only team who went nil for 100 years.... The Lovable Losers. As fans, we get mad about it, but look at it from a marketing stand point....chick-ching. I mean, think about it.....how do you think they are able to carry one of the top payroles year after year? They are not the highest, but they are in the top 10 most of the time.... Is this common for a team that hasn't won in over 100 years? What does that tell you about the organization?

I would like to hear feedback on this.....does anybody see my point or am I grasping at straws? The question is do they really want to win or not? From a money standpoint, I say no.

100 Years and Counting

I would like to start by saying that I am a diehard Cub fan, but by the time most of you are finished reading this, you will probably think otherwise. The bottom line is.....I bleed Cubbie blue, and I want nothing more than to see my team win a world series.

With that being said, something has to change. I present you all with a question.....out of the Cubs 100-year loosing streak, what has not changed for 94 of the 100 years?....Ladies and Gentleman, I give you Wrigley Field, or Weeghman Field, whichever you prefer. The Cubs have been playing in that park since 1915, and at that time, the park was 2 years old. Let's face it folks, it has brought nothing but defeat, bad luck, curses, and most of all.....loosing. That's right, I'm not saying I believe in superstition or anything like that, but I do believe in repetition, and when you put together a 100-year loosing streak....the longest in the history of any sport...... you have to stop and wonder....shouldn't something change?

I don't care if you want to talk about the called shot by the Babe in the "32" Series or the black cat right before the collapse in "69" or the infamous Billy Bartman ball in "03"....even if you take all those unfortunate happenstances away, the bottom line is.... the place is a dump. I am sick and tired of hearing about nostalgia and beauty and all that bunk. Give me Miller Park any day. When I go to a ball game, and I take my family, and it cost me over $200.00 just to sit down, the least they could do is give me a comfortable place to sit and a nice restroom. And here is a good idea, how about some food that is edible. If it's Ivy you want, it's a plant for goodness sake. I'm sure they could find you some seeds. Or manual scoreboard, I'm sure if it was that important to everyone it could be duplicated ( why I don't know ). Let's face it the entire place could be duplicated...right down to the obstructed view reserve grandstands (again I don't see why).

In conclustion, I would like to say that something has to change. This organization has to turn things around. 100 years of loosing is just not acceptable. They have tried everything else... why not try a new park? I don't know about all of you, but I am sick and tired of carrying the name "Lovable Looser" my whole life. We as Cub fans should all be sick and tired of being known as the fans that show up to games no matter what our team does. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with standing by your team, but 100 years and no world series ring? Well, I say if your not going to win, at least give something back to the fans and give us a new park.
